OctoberPlains v1.0-pre5
Just wanted to post an announcement that OctoberPlains v1.0-pre5 has been released and posted to GitHub (link in the context).

This release is mostly about under-the hood performance considerations (tick rate is now 20/sec instead of 10/sec, for example) but also makes a few improvements and bug fixes.

The plan for pre6 is to add basic audio to the OctoberPlains client.

I have changed the plans of what to do after that, though. I decided to drop the pre7 graphics rework update since the point of OctoberPlains is to test out the core tech before making OctoberPeaks, not to create a well-polished and good-looking product.

This means that pre6 will be followed by the first release candidate build, which will include some additional early-game items and balancing of world properties (block hardness, ore distribution, etc). The release candidates will generally just be for bug fixes and no real content or big changes should happen at that time. After all, the point of a "release candidate" is to be the "candidate" for the "release", where only show-stopping bugs should be considered valid for change.

This means that work on OctoberPeaks, proper, should begin sometime in October. The details of whether any changes to support that will make more sense in the OctoberPlains timeline (as a 1.1 sort of idea) or are best to built out as OctoberPeaks is being implemented, and only considered for it, will have to be figured out as the work gets started. While it would be nice to keep them compatible (both clients running against the same server), there will come a time where they need to diverge. Minimally, things like movement will need to be changed pretty early-on. The exact details will be figured out as I discover the actual issues.

Thanks for checking it out,
Jeff.
