I am really not sure where this movie will go. I don't know much about the source material or if this is only from an earlier movie (in which case it isn't too concrete). On one hand, it seems like an interesting story we haven't seen anyone do anything with in decades, but on the other hand, I get a little worried about movies in the "modern political climate" and how they are co-opted to validate the creator's personal hatreds and divisions.

The idea of folklore to describe mental illness is interesting since much serious mental illness was historically described via each culture's own folklore or religions. I suspect that some of those might have been useful foci for people dealing with it (or just those around them).
