I would suspect that, when it comes to attending funerals, it is mostly important for the people who knew them well or people close to those who knew them well and may be feeling the loss deeply.

If it isn't going to be a good place for you, due to other kinds of tension which still stick in your mind, then staying home probably makes sense (especially if this was a highly indirect connection).
